The Zakopane Conference on Nuclear Physics, for historical reasons called School, has been organized since 1963 by the Henryk Niewodniczanski Institute of Nuclear Physics PAN and the Marian Smoluchowski Institute of Physics UJ. Present conference is co-organized by the Committee of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
The aim of the conference is to increase the mutual communication of experienced and young scientists representing various areas of theoretical and experimental nuclear physics.
The present conference is entitled "Extremes of the Nuclear Landscape". Invited lectures, selected seminar contributions and posters will cover new developments in the study of nuclear phenomena: from low lying shell model states to collective excitations at extreme spins and temperatures, from light to superheavy nuclei, from exotic proton drip-line nuclei to very neutron rich nuclear systems. New opportunities and challenges arising at the radioactive ion beam facilities and the latest experimental methods and apparatus will be presented. We will discuss the role of today's nuclear structure research in the understanding of the astrophysical processes and the influence on other disciplines.
We wish to come back to the tradition proposing to everybody but first of all to the Ph.-D. Students and Post-Doctoral Fellows a midnight session which will combine the school-type structure of presentations with the frontier-research profile.
To expand our horizons a special lecture will focus on relations between physics, cosmology and philosophy.
Zakopane, beautifully situated at the foot of the Tatra mountains, offers a wide choice of free time activities. Early September promises mild, sunny weather, inviting outdoor recreation. Be sure to bring sturdy walking boots and clothing suitable for excursions and strolls. Short hiking trips into the Tatra Mountains National Park will be organized. For those who enjoy swimming, the Aqua Park Zakopane complex housing indoor and outdoor geotermal pools, is situated just beside the conference hotels. During your visit to Zakopane you will also have a chance to explore the surrounding Spisz and Podhale regions.
On the way to Zakopane you should consider spending some time in Krakow, the historical and cultural capital of Poland.
